Newport's 1730 Colony House, designed by Richard Munday, was the center of activity in colonial Newport and Rhode Island. The building was the scene of many dramatic events including landmark trials, the Stamp Act Riot, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a "Fete" hosted by the French General Rochambeau for the visiting George Washington, and the abolition of slavery in 1807.
